Vitiligo is a type
of pigmentation disorder in which the melencocyte cells are destroyed.
Melencocytes are the cells that are responsible of making pigments in the body.
Due to this disease white patches on the body appears and certainly hairs would
likely to grow from these parts of the body. It is thereby an autoimmune
disease. Most likely is the fact hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid
gland), adrenocortical insufficiency (the adrenal gland does not produce enough
of the hormone called corticosteroid), alopecia
areata (patches of baldness), and pernicious
anemia (a low level of red blood
cells caused by the failure of the body to absorb vitamin B12). Some
scientists also say that vitiligo is hereditary. Children whose parents also suffer
from this disease would have a great chance to get this disease as in
inheritance.
Unfortunately, vitiligo cannot be cured it can only be
recovered. For the treatment of this disease many medical therapies as well as
herbal treatments are suggested. Some of the medical therapies are as follows
Medical therapies
- Topical corticosteroid
- Topical immunomodulators
- Topical psoralen plus ultraviolet
- Oral psoralen photo chemotherapy (oral plus)
- Narrowband ultraviolet
- Excimer Laser
Now-a-days laser
treatments are very in, but in case of vitiligo it is reliable up to a very
small extent. Indeed all the above mentioned treatments cause side effects
which may leads to severe headaches and even skin cancer.
Surgical treatments
Then there are
surgical treatments that may be somewhat consider helpful. In these treatments
the parts or areas of the body that are affected by vitiligo are repigmented by
transplanting with the active pigments. Following are some of the treatments:
- Autologous Skin graft
- Blister Grafting
- Tattooing (micro pigmentation)
